J is for Jamie’s

Jamie’s Bar & Grill
427 Broadway
Sacramento

Jamie’s is such a good bar that they don’t even need to put their name on the front of the place. I think there’s a sign around the side, but who has the time to walk around and look for it when there’s whiskey to drink and steak sandwiches to power through?

Certainly not me. (more…)

Amgen Course is Totally Easy

Lance Armstrong has absolutely nothin’ on me.

As you may have heard, Lance and his cycling buddies are all coming to town on Feb. 14th for the opening stage of the Amgen Tour of California. The opening stage is a “time trial” stage which means each rider goes individually over the 2.4 mile course which circles around the Capitol.

It has always been my assumption that cycling is the easiest sport ever. So, even though I’m not sponsored or even registered, I decided I’d start the Amgen tour a little early and ride the course myself. (more…)

Firestone Building Coming Together Nicely

The tire shop turned downtown nightlife center is showing it’s first signs of life this month. While some of the larger tenants in the Firestone Building (16th & L Streets) are still waiting to be finished, the rooftop club Mix Downtown has been open since New Year’s Eve and the beautifully classic DeVere’s Irish Pub opens this week.

With Mason’s, The Three Fires Lounge, L Wine Lounge and more within easy walking distance, L Street is quickly becoming the best street in town. Better pick up the slack, J Street! You too, 21st! And, Alhambra, you’re not fooling anybody.

I is for Idle Hour

Idle Hour
6816 Fruitridge, Sacramento

For drinkers, venturing out from the midtown grid is always a risky endeavor. The bars are more spread out and if you pick a stinker then it’s a long walk/expensive cab ride to correct the errors of your ways.

However, the rewards of such an venture often outweigh the risk…especially for those in search of a more neighborhood feel.

I recently made the short trip south to the Idle Hour. Those of you who know Sacramento’s most famous burger spot, the Squeeze Inn, know the neighborhood. (more…)

Sacramento 2009

Happy new year to all (both) of Nick on the Town’s regular readers!

2009 should be an exciting time both on the NotT blog and in our fair city. I have to go be “on” a couple other towns for a while so I may not be able to keep up my blistering bi-weekly blogging, but there’s lots of good stuff on the horizon.

In 2009, Nick on the Town will feature:

* Watering holes I through Z in my ABC’s of Drinking in Sacramento.
* Lance Armstrong and the Amgen Tour of California are just about a month away. We’ll see how my time compares to pros. Sacramento is the starting point for this year’s race so it’s kind of a big deal.
* The PBR sacramento Classic on Jan. 17 & 18. No that’s not Pabst Blue Ribbon, even though that’s what I’ll be drinking while I’m watching the Pro Bull Riders.
* Tracking down a legendary Sacramento rock thrower.
* Settling the issue, once and for all, if that house from Eight is Enough is actually in Sacramento.

So you can see that there is much to look forward to in the near future.

In the meantime here’s a little something to remind suffering Kings fans about the salad days:
