Sacramento Featured in Run-of-the-mill Romantic Comedy!

Check out our fair city in the first few seconds of the trailer for the upcoming formulaic bore-fest known as “The Ugly Truth.” Nice work, Sacramento!

Where’s Nick?

Howdy readers!

Sorry for neglecting Nick on the Town for a bit. I was “Nick on some other towns” over the past couple weeks. First, I spent a week as a fish out of water in super-trendy Miami Beach before counterbalancing that trip with a 3-day excursion to Eureka to hang out with the fun-loving hippies. I’m not sure you can find two more different places in the whole country.

Anyhow, I’m glad to be back home because there’s lots of good stuff happening in Sacramento right now. As soon as I get unpacked, I’ll up date the ol’ blog for reals. See you real soon!

Concerts in the Park

concerts-header

It’s time for the return of Sacramento’s free friday concerts in the park! Each Friday evening from now through mid-August (a rain out last week means an extra show on Aug 14th) Cesar Chavez Park (9th &I) will fill with folks in search of a cheap way to celebrate the end of another excruciating work week. And it doesn’t get much cheaper than free.

Unfortunately, the beer is not free and you can only drink it in the fenced off “beer garden.” This is where I’ve watched most of these free shows over the past decade. Of course, I use the term “watched” loosely as the view from the beer garden is slightly less than ideal…but not as far from ideal as it would be without beer.

Once again, the concert series has managed to secure a solid lineup of local talent to take the stage.  I guess the biggest name would be June 19th’s performance by MC Rut, but I’m  looking forward more to Golden Shoulders, The Snobs and two “Kates” – Gaffney and Rowdy. No offense, MC Rut, get over it already. You wouldn’t believe how many phone calls I get from MC Rut begging for me to befriend them.

The shows are complemented by some good deals at local restaurants/bars. All you have to do is flash your beer garden wristband and the deals are yours. Click here for the info. Not sure how you get the deals if you don’t go to the beer garden. Not my problem.

Shows start at 5 and are over right at 9 so don’t try to be cool and roll in late cuz you’ll miss it.

R and S are for R15 and Shady Lady, Respectively

R15 and Shady Lady
R Street bewtween 14th & 15h
Downtown Sacramento

Just past the halfway point of the ABC’s of Drinking in Sacramento, I’ve picked up momentum by finding bars that both share a block and are alphabetically sequential.

This is the first time I’ve combined two ABC’s of Drinking stops into one and I kinda a feel bad about that, but I figure if all of you are anything like me than you’re not gonna hit one of these spots without hitting the other.

Nick on the Town has had R15 picked out as the R stop for a while now, but the Shady Lady is a newcomer that booted Socal’s or the Swiss Buda out of the ABC’s of Drinking by being so darned convenient.

The block of R street between 15th and 14th has really come together recently. What was once mostly just an empty brick building is now chock full of retail establishments at least four of which sell adult beverages. (more…)
