For many of us “midtown cocktail week” is every week, but from Aug. 10-16, it’s Midtown Cocktail Week for everyone.
Each night there will be an official Midtown Cocktail Week party at varying locations throughout midtown Sacramento. From a penthouse at the 1801 L Lofts to Mix Downtown and a bunch of places in between, you can sample the finest adult beverages our city has to offer.
Oh and all the events are free – or at least free to get into. I don’t think you get a bunch of free booze, but if you show up early you can get a free bottle opener.
For all the info that I didn’t feel like typing out, visit the official website.
Showing complete disregard for the rotten economy, new businesses have been popping up all over Sacramento. I’m sure I’m gonna forget some, but here’s a list off the top of my head of spots that have opened in 2009.
DeVere’s Irish Pub - Firestone Building – 15th & L Streets
Instantly popular, this pub is just like the ones you’d find in Dublin only it’s bigger, cleaner and doesn’t smell like vomit. I feel like I should say more, but that pretty much sums it up.
Mix Downtown - Firestone Building – 15th & L Streets
I think this actually opened up on New Year’s Eve so technically it was 2008, but I’m gonna let that slide. The Mix is right upstairs from DeVere’s and offers a comfortably hip atmosphere where you’ll find any number of gel-haired dudes sending out their “vibe” to a plethora of indifferent women. The Mix made a splash with their sliding scale cover charge which charges more the younger you are. I believe it’s $20 if you’re 21-29, $10 if you’re 30-39 and free if you’re 40+. You 39 year-olds might want to see if your old college buddy is still making fake IDs. (more…)
Sometime before August 22nd you should work your way over to the California Museum (for History, Women and the Arts) to see the Library of Congress’ Abraham Lncoln exhibit.
Titled “With Malice Toward None”the exhibit marks Lincoln’s 200th birthday and features some pretty significant articles that you might have heard of such as an original version of the Emancipation Proclamation, the contents of Lincoln’s pockets from the night he was shot and the famous Lincoln bible which both Lincoln and President Obama used for their inaugurations… and which I totally DID NOT take a picture of when I was at the exhibit because photography isn’t allowed in there.
The exhibit came straight from the Library of Congress and Sacramento is its only west coast stop, so get on it! And tell’m Nick on the Town sent you. This won’t mean anything to them and won’t get you any kind of discount or anything, but it’s a fun thing to say.
The California Museum is at the corner of 10th & O streets and the adult ticket price is $8.50.
Here’s a little video featuring the Lincoln bible:
