Sacramento Film & Music Festival

I had the pleasure of going to the Sacramento Film & Music Festival last night. We’re like 9 days in to the 10 day festival so I apologize for not giving you the heads up earlier.
They are showing a whole bunch of great movies and I was lucky enough to go see Paper Heart…I think it’s even like 3 weeks before the movie legitimately opens.
Lots of good things happen at the Crest Theatre, but I think you really experience the full power of the grand old movie palace when you’re at a film festival watching a quirky independent film filled with bittersweet moments, indie music and Michael Cera in a hoodie. I’m not saying it’s an amazing movie, but just that it’s the kind of movie the Crest exists for.
Normally when an actor just plays the same character over and over again in every movie I get sick of it, but for some reason I still like Michael Cera. I don’t know if that’s just his real personality or if the folks behind Arrested Development created it for him and he just rolled with it, but it’s highly amusing. The one thing he’s added since AD is the hoodie which, I feel, really enhances the character.
The other thing I notice about this kind of movie is that all these hip indie kids find a way to wear a whole bunch of layers even if they are in LA in the summer. The girl in this movie wears about 10 layers in every scene. I suppose it’s a good look, but man, I’d sweat through every one of those things. Yeah, I now a lot of the movie takes place in cold places, but still that’s a lot of layering.
Anyhow, the movie was pretty good and there are a lot more good movies playing the rest of the weekend and probably at next year’s festival too. Again, sorry for the late notice.

still a fan of Cera too. But he’s about to play Nick Twisp in ‘Youth in Revolt’, one of my favorite characters ever. I really hope he seizes the moment and makes with a new personality and doesn’t fall back on George Michael again. Twisp is his own kind of species. I swear i’m not high..

Hmmm, Cera as Nick Twisp, eh? Isn’t Cera like 22? Gettin’ kinda old to play a high school kid, but we’ll see….
