Sacramento’s Oldest Bars

July 13, 2011 at 1:06 pm 11 comments

My good friends over at the Idle Hour will be celebrating their 50th anniversary on August 5th (you can buy a sweet t-shirt with the above logo on it there).

That’s a long time for a bar to stay in business with the same name and same location.

I know Old Ironsides has been going strong for 77 years and that the Torch Club started in 1934 too, but had to relocate a couple times. If I remember correctly, the Pine Cove is pretty old, but also had to move when they built the highway.   Pre-Flite is like 40 years old and still thrives in its hidden little hole. I don’t know how old the Distillery is, but it looks like it’s been there a while.

Does anybody out there know of any other old bars in the area? Or do you have any more info on the ones I mentioned above? I want to hear some bar history!

    Way to go, IH!

What about Old Sac? Hasn’t Fanny Ann’s been there for awhile?

Ironically, I don’t think anything in Old Sac is actually that old. It was all rebuilt in the 60s and 70s. I think the sign in Fanny Ann’s says “Est. 1973″ or some year around there. So it’s pushing 40, that’s pretty good.

I went to my parents for this (bars they went to in at least the 1970s) and they came back with (that still exist):

Limelight (my grandpa hung out here and knew the owner, but maybe not until the 1970s-1980s?)
    Ye Olde Sticky Wicket
    The Maple Room
Brownies (they weren’t sure on this one)?

Maple Room & Brownies have got to be old. I’ll look into those. I’ve actually never been to Ye Olde Sticky Wicket, but if my experience with businesses that have “Ye Olde” in their name is any indication, I’ll love it. In any case, I wanna party with your folks.

Mushroom Lounge was one of my favorites when I worked off South Watt. Not sure how old it is , but it looks old. Check it out Nick. Especially for fans of Idle Hour and Pre-Flite

It’s the Trap like 120 years old?

    It smells like it is.

The Flame and the Monte Carlo seem to have been around a while too. What about Henry’s?

Looks like you may have finally found a legit bar to fill in the “Y” in the ABC’s of drinking. How exciting!

Yeah, I think the Monte Carlo is the oldest in Sac. Same location, same family.
