Anti-LGBT rhetoric and anti-gay slogans are themes, catchphrases , and slogans that have been used against homosexuality or other non-heterosexual sexual orientations and to demean lesbian , gay , bisexual , and transgender LGBT people. They range from the demeaning and pejorative to those expressing negativity on religious , medical, or moral grounds. It is a form of hate speech   which is illegal in countries such as the Netherlands,  Norway,  and Sweden. The rhetoric generally has an ideological basis in heterosexism , and can be motivated by homophobia , biphobia , and transphobia. The slogans listed here are not just terms of invective but they represent arguments that are commonly used to convey opposition to LGBT rights or to the full acceptance of LGBT people. But after dying of injuries suffered last month in what witnesses portrayed as a gay-bashing, the year-old Anthos has become a powerful symbol in a campaign to amend federal and state hate-crime laws to protect gays. According to police and family members, the Detroit man was riding a city bus home from the library on Feb. The man followed Anthos off the bus, confronting him again. Anthos told the man he was gay as he helped a wheelchair-bound friend who was stuck in a snowbank, witnesses said. The department is investigating whether it was a hate crime. Anthos touched the lives of many people.
But when schools offer to do this work by developing curricula that would help children understand concepts related to gender and sexuality in a developmentally appropriate fashion, those some parents tend to get angry. From sex ed classes to gender neutral bathrooms to gay pride, school administrators are often pressured by angry parents and conservative groups to roll back efforts at LGBT inclusion. These type of controversies in the classroom could have a lasting impact on how young kids grow up to see LGBT people. The backlash not only deprives students of an education about LGBT issues; it also communicates to them that issues that are important to the LGBT community are not worth their consideration and at worst, are offensive. Omar Currie, a third grade teacher in North Carolina, found himself amid a national controversy last year after he read a book to his elementary school class that featured gay characters.
The LGBT community has adopted certain symbols for self-identification to demonstrate unity, pride , shared values, and allegiance to one another. LGBT symbols communicate ideas, concepts, and identity both within their communities and to mainstream culture. The two most-recognized international LGBT symbols are the pink triangle and the rainbow flag.
